Walker Mill is just 23 minutes from one of the most famous museums in the world. In fact, this venerable institution houses one of America’s largest national art collections. We’re talking about the Smithsonian American Art Museum, which opened in 1829. Currently, many of the museum’s art pieces are available to view online, which means you can enjoy their exhibits from the comfort of our apartments in District Heights, MD. Read on to learn about three of our favorite exhibits:
Irving Penn: Beyond Beauty
Famous for his work that appeared in Vogue, Irving Penn ranks as one of the leading photographers of the 20th century. His impressive career spanned nearly 70 years. During that time, Penn became a master of both black-and-white and color photography. Eventually, his revival of platinum printing would go on to change the art world. Beyond Beauty highlights 146 photographs, including images on view for the first time.
Rick Araluce: The Final Stop
In The Final Stop, Rick Araluce turns a gallery into an underground subway platform. He uses many different techniques to pull off his vision. For example, he hand-carves furniture and paints wood to resemble cracking concrete. While Araluce calls Seattle home, this was his first large-scale exhibition on the East Coast.
Alexander von Humboldt and the United States: Art, Nature, and Culture
During his 90-year life, Prussian naturalist Alexander von Humboldt published dozens of books and traveled across four continents. In 1804, he spent six weeks in the United States. The Art, Nature, and Culture exhibition highlights his mission to understand the universe, as well as his concern for climate change. In addition, it also examines von Humboldt’s lasting impact on American cultural development. This spectacular display features over 100 paintings, sculptures, and even an introductory video.
